Ethnography is closely related to cultural (social) anthropology and sociology. Sociology is the study of individuals, groups or institutions and the relationships they have which make up human society.
Ethnography is a method of studying and learning about a person or group of people. Typically, ethnography involves studying and interacting with a group of people in their natural environment. The ethnographer attempts to gain a detailed understanding of the context and circumstances of the people being studied.
Ethnography is a very lengthy process which can often make it unsuitable for use within the development of real systems in today's business and computing environment. Even so, the concepts and theories that can arise from ethnography can be very valuable.
In a computer systems and HCI context, ethnography uncovers useful information which helps us understand and evaluate the requirements of multi-user systems. It also helps to show how systems are used in the cultural, political and social context of the organisation.
